Looking for a way to make your short haircut really stand out? Go blonde.

“There is definitely a blonde out there for everyone — it’s all about the tone,” says celebrity stylist Rachel Bodt. When determining your ideal blonde bob, Bodt says to pay attention to your undertones, making sure to choose colors that complement (not clash with) your skin tone. Likewise, she says that there’s a perfect bob for everyone. You simply have to figure out which length — a shorter French bob, asymmetric bob, or elongated lob — works best with your face shape.

Sally Hershberger senior stylist Jacob Schmidt concurs with this. “Typically, oval face shapes look great with a classic bob haircut, but you can do a shorter bob with a square face shape and longer for a round face shape,” he says. “Same with blonde color — it can be adjusted to suit your skin tone.”

Meet the expert

  • Rachel Bodt is a celebrity stylist who works with Emma Watson and Kate Hudson.
  • Jacob Schmidt is a senior stylist at Sally Hershberger.

Ultimately, the best way to uncover the quintessential blonde bob is to chat with your stylist. They’re well-versed in aligning colors and cuts with their clients. That said, if you’re looking for a little preliminary inspo, you can keep scrolling to find 20 glamorous blonde bobs to consider for your next hair makeover.

Ciara’s asymmetric lob from the 2021 BET Awards stopped us in our tracks. Bodt calls it the modern-day Marilyn, thanks to the solid, striking blonde shade. “The tone is a perfect mix of warm and cool — it’s a full double process,” she adds. (As for the wet-look texture? You can recreate it with your favorite wave spray. We dig the OUAI Wave Spray, $28.)

Lucy Boynton has one of the most instantly recognizable blonde bobs of the past few years. To achieve her look, Body says to ask for a “classic delicate blonde with finely woven highlights [and] a soft root shadow so you don’t see any ‘highlight’ marks.”

“To create a textured bob, pre-dry hair and wrap strands around a 1-inch curling iron for five to ten seconds away from the face,” he says. “When finished, let it cool for a few minutes and break up the curls with your fingers. Finish with a texturizing spray.”

Butter Blonde Bob

Mary J. Blige’s warm butter blonde bob from 2015 was a moment. To recreate her look, Schmidt says to start with the smoothing, frizz-preventing Color Wow Dream Coat Spray ($28). “Blow dry and take a ceramic flatiron and go over just the ends to maintain full, but smooth strands,” he instructs.

Kim Kardashian has worn a number of blonde hairstyles, including this turned-under lob. “I love this super icy platinum bob,” Schmidt says. “It’s bold, chic, and sexy. Add a shadow root to make it a bit easier to maintain.”

Elizabeth Olsen looked drop-dead gorgeous at the 73rd Emmy Awards in 2021 when she showed up with a blonde balayage bob styled in a shiny, old-Hollywood manner. To recreate the effortless yet glamorous look, Bodt says to ask for a warm teddy blonde base with golden ribbon highlights and a soft root dim.

Meagan Good always looks gorgeous, but can we talk about this bombshell bob from 2021? The bright sandy color perfectly compliments her skin tone.

Julianne Hough's asymmetric French bob looks so chic. With a jawbone-grazing silhouette, it's particularly suitable for oval face shapes.

Lea Seydoux’s dark strawberry blonde bob is too pretty to pass up. Bodt is a big fan of it for it’s bold face-framining silhouette and blunt ends, tied together with piecey dimension. The trick to creating such a bob, she says, is to “use a mix of foils and painting to make it look more effortless.”

Margot Robbie’s blonde S-wave bob is a great example of the iconic French silhouette, Bodt says. It’s characterized by a light blonde base with brighter balayage ribbons woven throughout, lending to a high-shine, illuminated appearance.

Back in 2014, LaLa Anthony sported this golden wavy bob for the Think Like a Man Too screening. We love how the warm tones beautifully compliment her glowing complexion.

“A deep side part completely transforms and elevates a bob,” Schmidt says, referencing Hailey Bieber’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party ‘do from 2020. “To add more dimension, pop in different shades of blonde throughout.”

Two-Tone Blonde French Bob

Excuse us while we fawn over Ciara's stunning two-toned blonde French bob from the 2013 BET Awards. To achieve that level of volume, you'll want to use velcro rollers to set a blown-out lift or move straight to hot rollers, like the Drybar The Roller Club Curling Hot Hair Rollers ($129).

Tousled Blonde Bob

Charlize Theron has rocked a blonde bob for years. “A tousled bob is as simple as air drying hair and running your fingers through to add some body,” Schmidt says, referencing her iconic effortless style. “Wrap a few pieces around a curling iron to really tie it together.”

Sleek Warm Blonde Bob

Check out Taraji P. Henson's sleek warm blonde bob from the 2017 MTV Movie and TV Awards. It's the perfect color for medium to dark skin tones, while the blunt, below-the-chin chop works well with her rounder face shape.

Bright Blonde Lob With a Full Fringe

What about a full fringe? Bangs are back, after all. “Bangs are a great way to transform a classic bob,” Schmidt says, pointing to Florence Pugh as proof. “I love flipping out the ends to give it a whimsical look.”

Beyoncé might be rocking the most incredible long bouncy blonde mane right now but back in 2015, she turned heads with her voluminous golden honey blonde bob. To recreate the color, Body says to ask for “soft honey golden blonde tones lifting the base slightly to get an all-over warm aura of tone.”

Voluminous Side-Parted Blonde Bob

Kate Bosworth's side-parted blonde bob looks as if she just ran her hand through it and flipped it to one side. That is to say, it's effortlessly chic.

Dimensional Blonde Curly Lob

Technically, anything above the shoulder is a type of bob, so we're saying that Jaz Sinclair's curly lob is a must for our 3C girlies. Truly, how stunning is her dimensional golden blonde balayage?

The more ovular your face is, the shorter bob you can get away with. Just look at Taylor Swift's iconic Grammys hairstyle from 2016. As for her colors, it's recently been dubbed old money blonde.

Not ready to fully embrace a bright blonde bob? Opt for a bronde balayage approach like Jourdan Dunn's instead.
