The New England Patriots head into the 2015 NFL season with a tag they haven't owned in a decade: defending Super Bowl champions.
There will be a point in the future at which the Patriots stop being the model of consistency they are and succumb to the parity that afflicts seemingly the entire rest of the league. The last four years, New England has been almost obscenely good.
The Pats lost to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI and followed that up with back-to-back defeats in the AFC title game. Then came last year's Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks. For most teams, that would be an unprecedented run of success. For New England, winning one Super Bowl in four years is almost cause for panic.
Remember how so many people got worked up after the Patriots' 41-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4?
In retrospect, maybe some of that was overblown a bit.
Barring something crazy happening, the Patriots should remain one of the best teams in the AFC through 2015.

Although there's every reason to be bullish on New England's prospects for the upcoming season, the Patriots do have some personnel questions, namely at running back and cornerback.
They decided to let both Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley leave via free agency. Neither decision came as a great shock, since Bill Belichick rarely spends much money on running backs. Vereen and Ridley weren't exactly world-beaters, either.
LeGarrette Blount seems the best bet to be New England's primary ball-carrier. The veteran was very good after joining the Patriots in the middle of the season, and he's more of a proven commodity than anybody else the team has.
Meanwhile, Football Outsiders' Aaron Schatz pegged James White to be the more dynamic pass-catcher out of the backfield:
Aaron Schatz 🏈 @FO_ASchatzReggie Bush coming to the Pats to play the Faulk/Vereen role would be fascinating, but I still think it just ends up as James White.
The Patriots don't need somebody to rush for a ton of yards every game. As long as defenses have to respect the running game somewhat, Tom Brady will have more than enough support.
On the other side of the ball, the cornerback position will be a little trickier to fill after Darrelle Revis' departure.
Even in a vacuum, there's almost nobody New England could find who would replace Revis' skill and production. He's one of the best corners in the league, and his absence will leave a void in the team's secondary.
Pivotal Matchups
It's like the NFL gods smiled down upon football fans when making the Patriots' schedule.
Peyton Manning grappled with the decision about whether to retire after the 2014 season. He's 39 years old, and his lack of arm strength is becoming harder and harder to mask. The legendary quarterback is nearing the end, and the 2015 season may well be his last.
Should Manning be done after 2015, at least fans will have gotten to see one more battle between him and Brady. The Patriots will hit the road to take on the Denver Broncos this year in a game that could have major implications for the top seed in the AFC.
Another game with a potentially similar impact is New England's date with the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts have seen their last two playoff appearances end at the hands of the Patriots. They'll want to get a measure of revenge in 2015, and they'll also likely be fighting for the AFC crown.
