Over 11 NBA seasons, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has played for four teams. The 31-year-old guard has spent the past two with the Denver Nuggets, helping them win a championship at the end of the 2022-23 season.
However, Caldwell-Pope's time in Denver could soon be coming to an end.
With a player option worth about $15.4 million for the 2024-25 season, Caldwell-Pope has a decision to make. He can either opt in for another season with the Nuggets, or he could become an unrestricted free agent and see what the market has to offer.
There's a good chance Caldwell-Pope could find more money if he hits free agency. That's why it's "increasingly expected" he will decline the option, according to a recent report by NBA insider Marc Stein.
If that happens, then which teams could show interest? Stein also noted that the Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers are "weighing runs" at Caldwell-Pope, should he become available.
It would make quite a bit of sense for the Sixers to target Caldwell-Pope.
For one, the veteran shooting guard remains a productive player at this point in his career. Caldwell-Pope averaged 10.1 points over 76 games during the 2023-24 season, while shooting 46 percent from the field and 40.6 percent from 3-point range.
Caldwell-Pope has averaged double-digit point totals each of the past three seasons (the first of which was spent with the Washington Wizards in 2021-22). He doesn't take a ton of shots per game, but he's efficient when he does shoot.
The 76ers already have a strong core in place, centered around center Joel Embiid and point guard Tyrese Maxey. They also have cap space to try to complement their star players as best they can.
While Caldwell-Pope wouldn't be another star, he'd be a strong supplemental piece in their rotation. His championship experience could also be beneficial for a Philadelphia franchise that hasn't made it past the second round of the playoffs since 2001.
The Sixers have enough financial flexibility that they could sign a player like Caldwell-Pope and still be able to make a bigger move (or several other mid-size ones). His probable contract wouldn't take up that much space.
It would be beneficial for the 76ers to add a player like Caldwell-Pope. And he should want to join a team that has legitimate playoff aspirations heading into the 2024-25 season. The two sides could possibly help take things to another level in Philadelphia.
