Adam Keefe Horovitz: Early Life

Adam Keefe Horovitz was born on October 31, 1966, in New York City to Doris Keefe and Israel Horovitz. His father was a playwright of Jewish descent while his mother was Roman Catholic. He grew up with his sister, Rachel Horovitz, in a secular household on Park Avenue in Manhattan.

Ad-Rock’s Musical Career and Other Projects

Ad-Rock started his musical career in the punk rock band The Young and the Useless before joining the Beastie Boys as their guitarist in 1982. He helped shape the band’s new sound, going from hardcore punk to hip hop. The Beastie Boys’ debut album Licensed to Ill was the first rap record to top the Billboard 200 chart and spawned six hit singles, including “(You’ve Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party.)” The band released four more albums before disbanding in 2011.

Aside from his work with the Beastie Boys, Ad-Rock remixed numerous tracks for other artists under the alias 41 Small Stars. He also plays bass in The Tender Moments, the backing band of New York-based cabaret performer Bridget Everett.

Ad-Rock has also acted in several motion pictures and television shows, including Lost Angels (1989), Roadside Prophets (1992), Godspeed (2007), While We’re Young (2014), and Golden Exits (2017).

In 2014, Ad-Rock worked on the soundtrack for the baseball documentary, No No,” about the pitcher Dock Ellis. In 2020, he was featured in the documentary Have a Good Trip as well as the Spike Jonze directed documentary Beastie Boys Story.

Personal Life

In the late 1980s, Horovitz dated American actress Molly Ringwald after meeting on the set of The Pick-up Artist. He was married to actress Ione Skye from 1992 to 1995 and has been in a relationship with riot grrrl artist and Bikini Kill singer Kathleen Hanna since 1997; they married in 2006. Horovitz is featured in The Punk Singer, a 2013 documentary film about Hanna’s life and career. He began wearing a medical alert bracelet following a tonic-clonic seizure in 2003 and enjoys playing softball, running a friendly league with his wife for 15 years. In 2016, he collaborated with vegan shoe company Keep to design a sneaker to benefit Planned Parenthood.

In 2017, Adam Horovitz and Kathleen Hanna purchased a $1.73 million house in South Pasadena, California. The 1912 Craftsman-style house has three-bedrooms, 1.5-baths, and sits on a quarter-acre of land. It is located about 10 miles from downtown L.A. and is a classic example of the architectural style popularized from the early 1900s to the 1930s. The home is 2,400 square feet and was originally listed for $1.688 million. The sale closed $42,000 more than the asking price.
