After struggling to find a first team spot in the Arsenal Reserve team, Alexi Lalas trained with former Arsenal player Bob McNab in California. He was then invited to tryouts for the United States team by coach Bora Milutinovic.

In the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Lalas became known for his physical ability and endurance on the pitch, standing out as a top player with his distinctive long beard and hair. He went on to become the first American in Italy’s Serie A as a member of the Calcio Padova.

Lalas also played for several Major League Soccer (MLS) teams, including the New England Revolution, MetroStars, and Kansas City Wizards. He had his most successful stretch with the Los Angeles Galaxy, winning the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, and MLS Cup. Lalas retired from soccer in 2002 and was elected into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2006.

After retiring from soccer, Alexi Lalas worked as President and General Manager of the San Jose Earthquakes, New York Red Bulls, and Los Angeles Galaxy. He was also an anchor for ESPN’s 2014 World Cup coverage alongside Bob Ley. Lalas worked as an analyst for ABC Sports and Fox Sports.

In addition to his career in soccer, Lalas is a big rock music fan and was part of the band The Gypsies, who opened for Hootie & the Blowfish in 1998. He has also released seven solo albums over his music career.
