Best Bowling Spell in IPL History

Mumbai Indians pacer Akash Madhwal has become the 28th bowler to register a five-wicket haul the Indian Premier League. Madhwal, who managed to achieve the milestone in only his seventh IPL match, has also made a place for himself among the Top Five names in the list of best bowling spell in IPL history.

Sixth MI bowler to pick a five-fer in the IPL, the 29-year old player is only the second bowler after former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Anil Kumble to have dismissed five batters whilst conceding runs in single-digit figures. In fact, Madhwal’s bowling figures are the joint-best when it comes to picking five (and not six) wickets.

Madhwal picked his maiden T20 five-wicket haul in the recently concluded IPL 2023 Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. First bowler to register a five-fer in an IPL playoff match, Madhwal now has the best bowling figures for a knockout match of the biggest T20 league around the world.

Best bowling figures against this opposition, these are also the best IPL bowling figures at the Chepauk. Speaking of this iconic venue, Mumbai’s latest hero has joined the likes of Laxmipathy Balaji (2008), Ravindra Jadeja (2015), Harshal Patel (2021) and Andre Russell (2021) among bowlers to have dismissed five batters in an IPL match in Chennai.

Speaking of the ongoing 16th season of the IPL, Madhwal has become only the third bowler after Super Giants’ Mark Wood and Sunrisers Hyderabad‘s Bhuvneshwar Kumar to have picked five wickets in a match.
