Bob McGrath death has been a depressing episode for the entire industry.
Bob McGrath, an actor and musician who was one of the original human stars of “Sesame Street” and became a generational legend, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2022, in his New Jersey home. He was 90.
His family confirmed the news on Facebook, writing, “Hello Facebook friends. The McGrath family has some sad news to share. Our father Bob McGrath, passed away today. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.”
In a tweet posted late Sunday night, Sesame Workshop expressed its mourning for the loss of Bob McGrath, a valued member of the Sesame Street family for over 50 years.
Sesame Workshop stated that Bob was a revered performer globally, his deep baritone filling airwaves and concert halls from Las Vegas to Saskatchewan to Tokyo many times over.
They further stated, “We will be forever grateful for his many years of passionate creative contributions to Sesame Street and honored that he shared so much of his life with us.”
When Sesame Street had its public television premiere on November 10, 1969, McGrath, who was raised on a farm in Illinois, was one of the four non-Muppet cast members.
McGrath appeared on Sesame Street from 1969 to 2017 and was one of the show’s first and most enduring human stars.
Over the span of 47 seasons, he appeared in 460 episodes as a cast member and musician.
Many of the original songs from the program were performed by him, including People in Your Neighborhood, Sing a Song, If You’re Happy and You Know It, and its massively well-liked theme song, Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame Street.
Over the years, he also acted in many Sesame Street productions, such as stand-alone movies, sing-alongs, Christmas specials, video games, and more.
These include Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, Sesame Street: Friends to the Rescue, Big Bird’s Story Time, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, Follow That Bird, and many others.
Despite quitting acting in 2017, he kept up his involvement with Sesame Workshop, making appearances at public events and acting as a spokesperson for the organization.
McGrath leaves behind his 89-year-old wife, Ann, five children, and eight grandchildren.
His fans & colleagues mourned his death
Following Bob McGrath’s passing, celebrities in Hollywood and the music industry sent their sympathies and tributes on social media including Holly Robinson Peete and Vanessa Williams.
On social media, actor Matt Knudsen wrote, ‘Our childhood wouldn’t have been the same without him.’
“Words cannot begin to express what Bob meant to me: a role model, a mentor, a friend. His kindness and wicked sense of humor were such a joy, and I loved him so much,” Muraoka wrote on Instagram. “Rest well my friend. You did good.”
One of McGrath’s key learnings from working on the renowned show was that you couldn’t help but be inspired by all of the excellent studies and good messaging broadcast on Sesame Street, the actor remarked in a 2015 interview. I realized how crucial it is to pay close attention to what your children have to say.
