Bob Menendez, a Democrat, was born in New York City in January 1954. He graduated from Saint Peter’s University and earned his JD from Rutgers University, Newark.

He served as the Mayor of Union City from 1986 to 1992 and as a Member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1988 to 1991. Menendez then served as a Member of the New Jersey State Senate from the 33rd district from March 1991 to January 1993.

From January 1993 to January 2006, he was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New Jersey’s 13th district. During his time in the House, Menendez served as the Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus from 1999 to 2003 and as the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus from 2003 to 2006.

In 2006, Menendez was appointed to fill the U.S. Senate seat for New Jersey left vacant by Jon Corzine, who had been elected Governor. Menendez was elected to a full term in the Senate in 2008 and has since been re-elected twice.

Menendez was the Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from February 2013 to January 2015 and became a Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in February 2018. He also served as the Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from January 2009 to January 2011.

Despite his years of public service, Menendez’s net worth has remained relatively low, ranging from $350 thousand to $600 thousand over the past decade, according to financial disclosures.
