He played for Zionsville Community High School and DePauw University before becoming an assistant basketball coach for Butler University from 2001 to 2007. Stevens was then promoted to head coach at Butler from 2007 to 2013 before becoming head coach of the NBA’s Boston Celtics. Stevens was a two-time Horizon Coach of the Year and three-time Horizon League Champion during his time at Butler, and won two NCAA Regional Championships.
