Cal Worthington was an American car dealer with a net worth of $100 million. He grew up poor and dropped out of school to work in his early teens. After enlisting in the Army Air Corps and training some of the first astronauts, he began selling used cars in Texas before moving to California.
Worthington became one of the first businesses to advertise on television and spent $15 million per year on ads during nighttime movie airings. His ads, which were parody style, became well-known across the West Coast and led to his appearing in movies. He sold $300 million worth of cars per year at his peak and owned a 24,000 acre ranch in Orland, California.
Cal Worthington passed away on September 8, 2013, survived by three sons, three daughters, and nine grandchildren. Despite his success in the car dealership industry, he will be remembered as a pop culture icon.
