Personal Statement
Dear Coaches,
I knew after my first game playing as a Squirt that hockey was going to be a passion for me. Everyone told me that I was starting this sport later than a lot of kids, but that just made me determined to work harder and become better. I participated in the available skating classes and found a great private coach that I still work with today. My first season was participating on a spring house league and was a great learning experience. I was the only first year player on my team, but my coaches and teammates were very supportive and provided a great learning experience. I earned a medal at the end of the season for ‘Most Improved Player’ and was so proud of what I had accomplished. From that experience, I was determined to work hard over the summer and earn a spot on the travel team in the fall. I filled my summer days with as many lessons as I could that were offered at the local rink and surrounding rinks as well as a week-long camp at a prestigious high school academy. My hard work and determination were rewarded when I made the travel team as a first year PeeWee. I continued with my hard work and training during the season and off-season to improve and for the past few seasons have secured my spot on the top travel team for my level. This year our travel team is AA Elite playing at the Bantam level. I am proud to be a valuable contributor on our team and am determined to keep training and improving to continue to be accomplished and play the sport I love. My goal now is to play on a junior team and eventually be part of a college hockey team. Even after I am done competing, I would like to continue with the sport through coaching and physical athletic training of hockey players.
Even though I have hockey practice every day, games during the week and on weekends, and plenty of school work from high level classes, I am able to manage my time and do well with all of my activities. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA or better through the duration of junior high and the first semester of Freshman year, which is my current grade level. I am taking honors classes during my Freshman year at Warren Township High School and my GPA after the first semester was a 4.3 out of 4.0. The demanding schedule of school and hockey during my years in junior high helped me to develop skills of time management, hard work ethic, promptness, and a positive can-do attitude. My coaches and teachers often comment on my positive attitude, good work ethic and determination.
What makes me different than other players are my focused determination, strong leadership skills and my desire to achieve. I don’t accept when my teammates have a negative attitude and try to set a good example through my words and actions. When I make a mistake in a game or the coach gives me negative feedback, I try not to take it personally or justify my actions. I think about it and try to perform better at the next opportunity.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me a little better. If you interested in hearing more about me, I would be excited to talk to you and learn more about your program.
Sincerely,
Cayden Cohen ‘04
