Canty Meets With Jets
Saturday, March 7
ESPN's Rich Cimini reported that Canty's visit with the Jets didn't result in a contract, but the two sides will continue to talk.
Canty was set to enter the final season of a three-year contract he signed in 2013 with Baltimore, but the Ravens announced on February 27 that they were releasing the 32-year-old as part of their effort to create salary-cap space.
The veteran defensive lineman told ESPN's Josina Anderson that he would be looking to find a spot capable of competing for a championship:
Like I said, there are some opportunities that I would consider with some of the teams that are considered Baltimore's rivals. It's not necessarily a motivating factor. It's just an opportunity to compete for a championship, and Baltimore has also been one of the those organizations that has been able to consistently do that.
Even though the Jets may not immediately jump out as playoff contenders, Canty is familiar with the New York area. He played for the Giants from 2009-12, posting a career-high four sacks in 2011 and helping lead the team to a Super Bowl.
At 32, Canty may not be a full-time starter anymore. He's also battled injuries recently, missing at least three games in each of the last three years.
As a rotational defensive lineman used in specific situations, however, he can still be a valuable asset.
