MONTREAL, Canada (CNN) -- Pop diva Celine Dion is pregnant.
"There's no hiding happiness," the singer said on her official Web site. "We can't keep something so big, so wonderful, a secret just for us."
Dion, 32, said she and her husband, Rene Angelil, got the news Thursday afternoon.
"We are completely, totally happy," she said. "And we thank God for the great joy we've been given."
Dion took a hiatus from her career after a New Year's Eve concert in Montreal to spend more time with her husband and try to become pregnant, her spokeswoman said.
She and Angelil had tried unsuccessfully for years to start a family.
In recent weeks, Dion underwent fertility treatments at a New York clinic, the spokeswoman said.
The singer of "My Heart Will Go On" said she and Angelil "went through a terrible test together, but we made it through," referring to his throat cancer diagnosis last year.
Before undergoing radiation treatment, Angelil had frozen his sperm.
"The man of my whole life was seriously ill," she said. "He could have thrown in the towel, given up, and let our happiness die. But, instead of giving up, he chose to fight with all his might. Because he loves life. Because he loves me. For his children, for his friends."
Dion said Angelil underwent tests in recent days and that the results were negative.
"The doctors who examined him found no trace of the disease. For me, this is still what counts most."
Dion's latest video, released last month, is "I want you to need me."
The French Canadian has won Grammy Awards in the United States, Juno and Felix Awards in Canada, and World Music Awards in Europe. She is the youngest of 14 children. Both her parents were musicians.
At age 12, she wrote a song that was brought to the attention of Angelil, who first became her manager, then her husband.
In February, she sued the National Enquirer for $20 million, claiming that the tabloid implied she had said she was pregnant with twins.
"This thing has really upset me," Dion said at the time. "Since that story came out, everyone has been congratulating me, and I have to keep telling them that it's not true. I only wish it was true."
