(CNN) -- The following is a timeline of some of the worst accidents and fatalities to occur on the world's subway networks:
August 1903 - One hundred people die at Couronnes station on the Paris Metro when an empty train catches fire, filling the platform with smoke.
February 1975 - Forty-three dead and scores injured when London Underground train packed with rush hour commuters smashes into dead end of a tunnel at Moorgate station. The accident was London's worst ever subway disaster.
November 1987 - Thirty-onekilled and dozens injured when an escalator fire engulfs the ticket hall at Kings Cross station on London's Underground system. Despite extensive police enquiries one of the dead still has not been identified.
August 1991 - Five people killed and more than 200 injured when a New York City subway train derails near Union Square station.
March 1995 - Twelve killed and thousands injured in a gas attack on the Tokyo subway. The attack, using deadly Sarin gas, was blamed on the Aum Shinrikyo cult, several of whose members have been sentenced to death.
July 1995 - More than half-a-dozen killed or injured in a bomb blast on the Paris Metro system. Police blame Islamic militants for the attack.
August 1995 - Three people killed when a packed commuter train collides with a stationary train on the Toronto Subway.
October 1995 - About 300 people are killed and at least 250 injured when a crowded subway train catches fire in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan.
March 2000 - Four killed and more than 40 injured in rush hour collision between two trains on the Tokyo subway. Officials said the crash was the first fatal accident in the network's history.
June 2000 -Sixty-six people injured, three seriously, when a Manhattan-bound train on New York's subway system derails in Brooklyn.
February 2001 -Fifteen people including two children injured in rush-hour bomb blast at Moscow's Belorusskaya station, one of the busiest on the Russian capital's subway network.
February 2003 -Scores killed and dozens injured in suspected arson attack at a subway station in the South Korean city of Daegu.
February 2004 - Russian officials open terrorism investigation into underground explosion on a Moscow metro train that killed at least 22 people and wounded more than 70 others.
