Kaepernick was just 1-of-5 for four passing yards in the snowy game and was sacked five times. He also had six rushing attempts for 20 yards. The 49ers (1-10) trailed the Bears (2-9) 24-6 in the fourth quarter at the time of the quarterback switch.
After the game, head coach Chip Kelly told reporters he made the decision in an attempt to get an "offensive spark" and that it's not a permanent switch.
According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, it was the first time in history a quarterback has taken five sacks while recording fewer than five passing yards in a game.
Despite the poor showing, Kaepernick told reporters he was surprised to find himself on the bench, via CSN Bay Area:
Gabbert bested Kaepernick's yardage total on his first play from scrimmage, completing an 18-yard pass to Jeremy Kerley.
The former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback was the team's starter in the beginning of the season. He showcased a lot of inconsistency over his five games, with five touchdowns, six interceptions and a 69.6 quarterback rating.
Despite the poor showing Sunday, Kaepernick had played well in the past few weeks, totaling 296 passing yards and 113 rushing yards one week earlier against the Miami Dolphins. The 29-year-old took over in Week 6 and has started each of the last seven games. Although he hasn't led the team to any wins, he has performed well, with 10 touchdowns and just three interceptions coming into the Week 13 game.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Sunday that Kaepernick plans to void his contract and become a free agent at the end of the season.
