Believe it or not, students were writing opinion pieces, narratives, and informative texts way back in kindergarten.
But real talk: first graders get on the writing grind and cut out a lot of that "drawing and dictating" that's allowed to bolster kinder-writing. First grade Common Core Standards for Writing ask students to add some structure, some organization, and some beef. There are still a few standards waiting in the wings for later years, but with some guidance from you, Teach, first graders will really start to strengthen their writing in these early years.
