David Benioff was born on September 25, 1970, in New York City to Barbara and Stephen Friedman. He grew up with two older sisters in Manhattan and attended the Collegiate School in New York City. After graduating, he worked various jobs before pursuing a career in academia. He studied Irish literature at Trinity College Dublin in 1995, where he met his future collaborator, D.B. Weiss. However, he ultimately decided against a career in academia and received a degree in creative writing from the University of California, Irvine in 1999.
