What is Domenico Dolce’s Net Worth?
Domenico Dolce, the co-founder of fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, has a net worth of $1.5 billion. He achieved success alongside Stefano Gabbana, with whom he co-founded the company. The two were also romantically involved from 1982 to 2003.
Domenico Dolce’s Early Life and Career
Domenico Dolce was born in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily, Italy in 1958. His parents worked in the fashion industry – his father was a tailor and his mother sold fabrics and apparel. Dolce moved to Milan in his late teens to attend the fashion design school, Istituto Marangoni, but dropped out before completing the program. He felt confident that he had learned enough to work in the fashion industry and dreamed of working for Armani.
Dolce & Gabbana: From Humble Beginnings to Global Recognition
In 1980, Domenico Dolce met Stefano Gabbana through their shared employer, Giorgio Correggiari. Three years later, they left Correggiari to start their own fashion brand, Dolce & Gabbana S.p.A. The duo quickly gained popularity, holding their first fashion show in 1985 and opening their first store in Milan in 1987.
D&G continued to expand their brand throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, releasing new collection lines and establishing a partnership with Dolce’s father’s manufacturing company. The brand received worldwide recognition when Madonna chose D&G to design costumes for her Girlie Show World Tour in 1993.
Throughout the rest of the 1990s and into the 2000s, D&G continued to expand their product line and open more boutiques. By 2009, the brand had over 100 stores and 20 factory outlets and a staff of almost 4,000 people.
Dolce has remained one of the most successful Italian designers of all time, receiving numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2009, he and Gabbana were awarded the Ambrogino Gold Medal by the city of Milan, and in 2014, they were honored by the La Fondazione NY at its third awards gala in New York City.
Controversies Surrounding Dolce and Gabbana
Despite achieving great success, Dolce and Gabbana have faced some controversies. In 2013, they were convicted of tax evasion and given a 20-month suspended sentence. The court found them guilty of failing to declare millions of euros of revenue earned through their subsidiary company, Gado. However, they appealed and were later cleared of any wrongdoing by an appellate court in 2014.
In 2018, Dolce and Gabbana issued an apology video after their promotional videos for a fashion show in China were accused of being racist. Additionally, leaked messages between the designers were revealed to be insulting towards Chinese people.
Dolce and Gabbana’s Relationship and Controversy
Dolce and Gabbana, the founders of the luxury fashion brand D&G, had a professional and romantic relationship for many years. They officially came out as a couple in 1999 and purchased a villa in Milan together. Although they ended their romantic relationship in 2003, they continued working together at D&G and lived in separate apartments in the same building in Milan.
However, in 2015, Dolce caused controversy after he made remarks about his disapproval of in vitro fertilization (IVF). He referred to children born via IVF as “synthetic” in a magazine interview. This statement was not well-received by British singer-songwriter, Elton John, who called for a boycott of the D&G brand. Dolce retaliated by calling John a fascist and encouraging a counter-boycott. Dolce later apologized for his remarks.
