Evidently, the reason this song (“Dutton Ranch Freestyle”) is dubbed a freestyle is because it very much sounds like what is generally regarded as such in the music industry, i.e. a hip-hop piece composed of seemingly impromptu lyrics.

David Morris, from what we can gather, is primarily a country musician. But this particular song, most simply put, is a rap. However, it definitely possesses a country element, with “Dutton Ranch” for instance being a reference to a site in Montana’s outback that was made famous as the setting of Yellowstone, a cable TV show that’s currently trending in the United States. The main character of that series is one “John Dutton”, whom David gives a shoutout to, as well as a few other figures from the program, in addition to mentioning the word “Yellowstone” a few times throughout.

That said, the song itself is not about said series. Rather, what we’re dealing with here is a rap freestyle whose lyrics are partly reminiscent of your standard country track. In other words, there are both country music and hip-hop elements to this piece.

For example, David goes about presenting himself as someone as a religious fellow from “a small-town area” who enjoys being in his truck and going to places which read like they’re in the backwoods. That’s the country element of what he’s putting forth. But the vocalist also comes off as being, let’s say self-centered.

Furthermore, before closing out this piece’s singular verse, Morris apparently gives a shoutout to his shooter, i.e. ‘his boy Rip’, which is another common mannerism of a rapper. So it’s like in this case the listener is getting the best of both worlds, so to speak.

The Chorus

Meanwhile the lyrics of the chorus, even if recited in a hip-hop fashion, reads more straight-up country. That is to say that they center on the vocalist befriending a romantic interest in a bar – a storyline which seems to be featured in at least half of the hit country songs out there.

So let’s conclude by saying that now, by the looks of things, even some white musicians are getting up on the country-rap fad.

David Morris, "Dutton Ranch Freestyle" Lyrics

As of the release of this track on 5 August 2022, David Morris appears to be an indie musician with an admirable following on Facebook and especially Instagram. It would seem that he’s been in the game since 2019, the year which Morris dropped an EP titled “Small Town Friday Night”.

And the most-popular song thus far in this catalog would be one he came out with earlier in 2022 titled “Who Hurt You”. However, it should be noted that as of this writing, “Dutton Ranch Freestyle” is seemingly blowing up, i.e. making it onto the top 30 of the Live iTunes US chart. Also impressively is the fact that the song holds the distinction of being one of the most popular country songs of 2022.
