House of the Dragon Has 17 Dragons named Caraxes, Meleys, Syrax, Seasmoke, and 13 more. 17 dragons were alive in the first season of the HBO fantasy series.
Similarly, the makers of House of the Dragon have mentioned five new dragons will be added in the second season.
The Targaryens started riding dragons as one of the noble houses of the Valyrian Freehold. After the Doom of Valyria kills most of the dragons along with their tamers, the Targaryens remain the only family with the fire-breathing creatures.
Arrax
Rider: Lucerys Velaryon
Arrax was a male dragon hatched between 115 AC to 120 AC. He was described to be of pearlescent white color with yellow flame. He had a golden chest and eyes.
As an egg, Arrax was placed in Lucerys' crib. He rode with Lucerys in season one but was ultimately killed by another dragon named Vhagar in the sky above Shipbreaker Bay. His rider Lucerys also dies during the ordeal.
Arrax's head and neck along with Lucerys' dead body washes up on the shore of Storm's End three days after their death.
Balerion
Riders: Aegon I Targaryen / Viserys I Targaryen
Balerion was a male dragon who died before the start of the House of the Dragon. He is described to be of black color with black wings and scales. Due to his physical features, he was nicknamed the Black Dread.
Balerion was the largest dragon since the conquest of Westeros by Aegon Targaryen, also called Aegon the Conqueror. He was so large that he could swallow a hairy mammoth.
The dragon possessed long sharp teeth which were the same length as a sword. Likewise, his fire was so hot that it could turn sand into glass and melt steel.
During his lifetime, he also took several other riders like King Maegor I Targaryen and Aerea Targaryen. His final rider was Visery I Targaryen.
Balerion died a year after Viserys claimed him. Born in Valyria in 114 BC, he was nearly 200 years old at the time of his death.
As Balerion was already dead before the events of season one, he didn't appear in the show. However, his skull loomed over the heads of Rhaenyra and Viserys during one of their conversations.
Caraxes
Rider: Daemon Targaryen
Caraxes, also known as Blood Wyrm, is a powerful dragon in the House of the Dragon. Daemon Targaryen first mounted him in 105 AC.
Caraxes is red in color and is experienced in battle. Before Daemon, his' rider was Aemon Targaryen. Daemon took him after the murder of Aemon.
Caraxes became one of the major highlights of the first season of the HBO series. Season one didn't feature a battle scene with the dragon. However, he is shown to be a ruthless and fearsome creature.
Dreamfyre
Rider: Rhaena Targaryen [Former]
Dreamfyre is a female dragon of pale blue color and silver stripes. She was first mounted by Rhaena Targaryen in 35 AC.
In the House of the Dragon series, Dreamfyre is riderless. Later, Aemond claims to have stolen one of her eggs.
As per some theories, Dreamfyre is the mother of the three dragons owned by Daenerys in Game of Thrones.
Meleys
Rider: Rhaenys Targaryen
Meleys is a female dragon with pink wings and scarlet scales. She has copper-colored claws, crests, and horns.
Meleys is nicknamed the Red Queen for her distinctive crown of thorns on her head. She is also given the title Beast Beneath the Boards in episode nine.
Meleys was mounted by Rhaenys in 87 AC. The Targaryen princess is seen riding the dragon in the fifth episode of House of the Dragon.
Rhaenys is her second rider as she was previously ridden by Princess Alyssa Targaryen. She is initially left riderless when Alyssa dies during childbirth.
At the end of season one, Rhaenys and Meleys join forces with Rhaenyra in her quest to become the Queen of Westeros.
Moondancer
Rider: Baela Targaryen
Moondancer is a female dragon yet to appear in the HBO series. According to the books, she has slender pale looks.
She was born in Dragonstone and mounted by Lady Baela Targaryen. Moondancer is ultimately killed and eaten by another dragon named Sunfyre.
However, her death was not wasted as she succeeds in seriously injuring Sunfyre, who eventually dies because of the wounds.
Seasmoke
Rider: Laenor Velaryon
Seasmoke is a male dragon of silver-gray color. He is first mounted by Laenor in 101 AC.
The creature was first featured in House of the Dragon in the third episode of season one. He and Laenor help Daemon and Lord Corlys Velaryon win the battle against the Crabfeeder.
Seasmoke is left riderless after Laenor fakes his death and goes missing. He is taken by Daemon, who hopes to use him to secure Rhaenyra's succession to the throne.
Silverwing
Rider: Ulf White / Alysanne Targaryen
Silverwing is a silver-colored female dragon. She was born between 36 AC and 42 AC.
Alysanne Targaryen mounted Silverwing in around 48 AC. She also tries to go beyond the wall with her dragon but Silverwing rejected to go every time.
After Aysanne's death, Silverwing is claimed by a dragonseed named Ulf White.
Sunfyre
Rider: Aegon II Targaryen
Sunfyre is a male dragon with scales of golden color and ping wings. He is often considered to be the most beautiful dragon of all time.
Like his scales, Sunfyre also blew golden fire. Although he is still a baby dragon in season one of House of the Dragon, he will ultimately be ridden by King Aegon II Targaryen.
Syrax
Rider: Rhaenyra Targaryen
Syrax is a female dragon named after a Valyrian goddess. She has several distinctive features, including yellow scales.
She is first ridden by Rhaenyra in 104 AC when the Targaryen princess was only seven.
Syrax lays several eggs during her lifetime, among which one is given to Rhaenyra's step-daughter Rhaena.
While Syrax is still alive in the TV show, she is killed during the Dragonpit storming in the book series.
Tessarion
Rider: Daeron Targaryen
Tessarion is a female dragon born before 120 AC. She is one of the youngest dragons during the Dance of the Dragons.
Tessarion is blue in color and possesses dark cobalt wings. Similarly, her belly scales, claws, and crest resembled the color of copper.
By 129 AC, Daeron successfully mounted the dragon by 129 AC.
Unhatched Dragon
Rider: None
HBO fantasy series House of the Dragon featured an unhatched dragon egg in the second episode of season one.
It is originally expected to go to Prince Baelon, King Viserys' son. The egg was laid by Dreamfyre. As the dragon Sunfyre was born soon after the egg was shown, many viewers of the show believe that Sunfyre hatched from the egg.
Vermax
Rider: Jacaerys Velaryon
Vermax is a male dragon with pale orange wings and olive green scales. He was hatched in the crib of Prince Jacaerys, the son of Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Jacaerys and Vermax initially have some issues bonding with each other. However, by the season finale, the two have become best buddies.
At the end of season one, the two fly towards North to gather support for Rhaenyra. It is mentioned that Vermax turns hostile when he comes across cold, snow, or ice. So, it will be interesting to see how he will withstand the cold of the North.
Vermithor
Rider: Jaehaerys I Targaryen [Deceased]
Vermithor is a male dragon of bronze color and tan wings. He was previously ridden by King Jaeherys I but remains riderless in season one of the HBO show.
He was born in 34 AC in the cradle of Prince Jaehaerys I and gets mounted by the prince in 48 AC.
Vermithor appeared in the finale of House of the Dragon's first season. He appears after Daemon sings a song in Valyrian.
Vhagar
Rider: Aemond Targaryen
Vhagar is a female dragon appearing in the first season of House of the Dragon. She is of bronze color and possesses bright green eyes along with greenish-blue highlights.
Vhagar is considered one of the biggest dragons with a huge throat big enough for a horse to pass through.
Queen Visenya first mounted the dragon. After her death, she was claimed by Laena Velaryon, who unfortunately died during childbirth.
Aemond mounted Vhagar after Laena's funeral. During the ensuing struggle, Aemond loses one of his eyes but later claims that the prize was worth the price.
Vhagar eventually kills Prince Lucerys and his dragon Arrax in the season one finale, setting up an upcoming civil war.
