“Graveyard” by Halsey

The premise of Halsey’s “Graveyard” is the singer being in love. But the person she has these feelings for is having a ‘detrimental’ effect on her life.  This is not due to him hurting her directly per se. Rather he is a toxic individual in general, as in someone who has his own pressing issues, which  include alcoholism. And Halsey is ‘digging herself down deeper’ in order to meet him on his level. This reads as if she is not only attempting to stay committed but also wants to help him overcome his problems, even going against the advice of others in order to do so.

And this brings us to the title of the track, where Halsey states that she was prepared to follow this person “all the way to graveyard” at that particular point in time. But the fact that she relays this sentiment in the past tense indicates that she indeed developed the courage to break up with him. And that brings us to Halsey’s intended message of this song, which is that individuals must develop the resolve/self-love necessary to separate themselves from lovers who are leading them to a bad place. And doing so is not easy, even when said person clearly has self-destructive tendencies. But at the end of the day, it is better than letting such an individual lead you into the “graveyard” also.

Tease and Release of “Graveyard”

Halsey first teased this song on 3 September 2019 by posting its cover art and date of release onto social media.

She first performed the song on 10 September 2019 at Rihanna’s “Savage X Fenty Show”. The aforementioned show was actually a fashion show that featured musical guests held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The track was eventually officially released, by Capitol Records, on 13 September 2019.

Leading up to the release of “Graveyard”, Halsey live streamed herself painting a giant self-portrait.  A time-lapsed version of that project is also available online.

“Graveyard” serves as one of the singles dropped from Halsey’s third album “Manic”. On “Manic” also appears Halsey’s mega hit single “Without Me“.

The creative team behind this song include Louis Bell, Jon Bellion, Ojivolta and the Monsters & Strangerz (A. Izquierdo, S.  Johnson and J.  Johnson) on the production tip.

They all also served as co-writers along with Halsey and Amy Allen along with Raul Cubina.
