The WBC stripped boxer Jermall Charlo of his WBC middleweight title on Tuesday after he was arrested Monday night on driving while intoxicated charges.

According to ESPN's Mike Coppinger, Pearland Police Department public information officer Chad Rogers said Charlo was arrested in Texas and charged with misdemeanor DWI, fleeing the scene of an accident and eluding police.

In statement, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said Charlo had been stripped of his title and added: "The WBC has provided and will continue to do as much as possible to support Jermall Charlo during his difficult times with regards to mental wellness."

Per Coppinger, police said Charlo's Lamborghini and another vehicle were involved in an accident Monday, and Charlo left the scene before officers arrived.

Police pursued Charlo for about one mile, and he didn't stop until an officer pulled in front of him while he tried to run a red light.

Field sobriety tests were administered to Charlo, and it was found that he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.15, putting him well above the legal limit of .08.

Charlo, 33, won the vacant interim WBC middleweight title in a victory over Hugo Centeno Jr. in 2018. Charlo later had the interim tag removed and went on to have five successful defenses.

His most recent defense was a unanimous-decision win over Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021, and since it has been nearly three years since he put the title on the line, Coppinger noted that Sulaiman had been facing increasing pressure to strip him of the championship.

Charlo's arrest was the catalyst to make it happen, and Carlos Adames is now the new WBC middleweight champion, as he had been the interim champ since October 2022.

While Charlo was stripped of the title, he remains undefeated with a perfect 33-0 record in his professional career.

In November, Charlo fought for the first time in over two years, beating Jose Benavidez Jr. at 166.5 pounds.

Charlo was originally scheduled to face Canelo Álvarez this month, but the fight was called off when Canelo left Premier Boxing Champions (PBC). Álvarez faced and defeated Jaime Munguía instead.

Following his arrest, Charlo was held at Brazoria County Jail, but he was released on a $9,500 surety bond.
