Early Life and Musical Influences

John 5, born John William Lowery on July 31, 1970, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, started playing guitar at the age of 7 after watching “Hee Haw” with his father. He took guitar lessons from Robert Gillespie during his youth, learning rock ‘n’ roll and classic blues guitar. John 5’s parents were supportive of his budding music career as long as he was able to keep his grades up. Some of his early influences were Kiss, the Monkees, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen.

John 5: A Career in Music

John 5 moved to Los Angeles at 17 and started working as a session guitarist. He played for Alligator Soup and Sun King before meeting producer Bob Marlette. They worked on movie and TV soundtracks, infomercials, and commercials. John 5 played for Lita Ford, Kiss, and Paul Stanley before forming Red Square Black and Bone Angels. He toured with k.d. lang before forming 2wo with Rob Halford, Ray Riendeau, James Wooley, and Sid Riggs. They released “Voyeurs” in 1998.

David Lee Roth chose John 5 for his “DLR Band” in 1998, the same year John 5 joined Marilyn Manson’s band. He played on several of Manson’s albums before leaving in 2004 to release his debut solo album, “Vertigo.” He subsequently released several more solo albums.

In 2005, John 5 formed Loser but left to work with Rob Zombie. He has played on several of Zombie’s albums and scored “The Lords of Salem” soundtrack. In 2021, John 5, Zombie, Tommy Clufetos, and Nikki Sixx formed the supergroup L.A. Rats, and their song “I’ve Been Everywhere” was featured on the soundtrack of the Liam Neeson action-thriller “The Ice Road.” He also worked as a composer and performed on albums for Alice Cooper, Sebastian Bach, and Steve Perry.

John 5 becomes Mötley Crüe’s new touring guitarist

John 5 joined Mötley Crüe as their new touring guitarist in 2022, following Mick Mars’ retirement due to health issues. However, his addition caused a rift between Mars and his former band mates Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, and Vince Neil.

Mars claimed that after announcing his retirement, his band mates of 41 years asked him to give up his ownership stake in their business LLC, effectively cutting him out of earning a profit from the group going forward. However, his former band members argued that since they had already sold their publishing rights and master recordings and were no longer releasing new records, touring was their only remaining source of revenue and John 5 needed to be paid.

John 5’s Personal Life and Interests

John 5 has two children, Nicole and Jeremy, from his previous marriage. He was also briefly married to adult actress Aria Giovanni from 2002 to 2006. In June 2009, he married hair stylist Rita Aghajani and became the stepfather to her son Andre.
