Kelley King Earnhardt was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina, in 1972 to a racing family. Her parents divorced when her younger brother Dale Jr. was born, and they lived with their mother until her house burned down when Kelley was eight. She learned to drive from her father and raced frequently at Hickory Motor Speedway and Myrtle Beach Speedway during her youth. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in Business Administration.
