Who is Kimberly Avila?

Kimberly Avila, known initially as Ramiro Avila Jr., was a vibrant and lively girl known for effortlessly forging friendships.

A transgender Latina, Kimberly had a penchant for dressing up and earned her livelihood through sex work, often frequenting the downtown bars of Brownsville, Texas.

Despite her profession, she maintained a disciplined routine of returning home every night, regardless of the hour.

The night it all changed

The Kimberly Avila missing case occurred on May 13, 2017.

Her sister, Ivon Avila, dropped her off at a bar at the 1200 block of E. Washington Street in Downtown Brownsville around 2:40 am.

Little did they know that this would mark the last time they would see each other.

As the night progressed and Kimberly failed to return home, the alarm bells of worry began to ring louder in the hearts of her family.

Frantic and increasingly concerned, Kimberly’s family attempted to reach out to her but met with silence.

The mounting worry led them to contact the local authorities, prompting them to file a missing person report.

The details of Kimberly’s attire on the night of her disappearance are etched into memory: a black wig and a black skirt.

This task force aimed to tackle the concerns surrounding Kimberly’s disappearance and create a more inclusive and safe environment.

Mayor Trey Mendez highlighted this as a step towards eradicating discrimination and ensuring the safety of all residents.

The family’s appeal

They questioned District Attorney Luis Saenz’s actions and pressed for clarity on his statement.

They suggest that more funds could have been raised if not for Kimberly’s identity as a transgender woman.
