Alito joined the United States Army Reserve after receiving his degree from Princeton and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.

He attended Yale where he was a year behind future Justice Clarence Thomas and a classmate of future dean Anthony T. Kronman. 

Alito served on active service from September 1975 to December 1975 after earning his law degree from Yale University. He spent the remainder of his Army career in the inactive Reserves. He was captain when he first received an honorable discharge in 1980.
