“Love of My Life” by Harry Styles

The first verse of Harry Styles’ “Love of My Life” acts like a reminiscing of what he and his ex-partner used to do such as taking strolls on Sunday afternoon and watching the news. Even when Styles has to part ways, he has something to remember his partner by that he takes with him everywhere.

Styles then touches on his friendship with “Johnny”, whom I’m assuming could be Johnny Depp. It’s worth noting that since the summer of 2013, when One Direction (Styles former band) performed a private gig at Depp’s house, both Styles and Depp hit it off as friends. Their friendship blossomed further after they became neighbors in London later that year. It has been reported that Depp provided Styles advice on how to handle fame at a young age.

After a breakup, we usually tend to relive memories whenever one passes by places visited together with an ex. Styles is no different in this sense, as he finds himself going through the memories associated to such places, bringing him much sadness.

Being in a romantic relationship is very much different from friendship. A lot more emotions are experienced as we uncover everything about ourselves and our partners. With that said, there are times when people cover their true selves even to their romantic partner, until probably the very end of a relationship. In this case, Styles has tried ways to peel off the layers off his former significant other to no avail.

Filled with regret of leaving, he confesses that it’s not what he wanted. However, their time together has run out and despite the reason that led up to the breakup, Styles wants his ex to know that they “were the love of (his) life.”

Could the Song really be About Johnny Depp?

Noting how close Styles and Depp are/were, it does leave some room for consideration that this song could be about Johnny Depp especially since he loved his ex-wife (Amber) enough to continue staying with her despite her alleged abuse towards him. That is, until Amber filed for divorce two years into their marriage.

“Love of My Life” was released on 20^th May, 2022, the same day as Styles’ third solo album, “Harry’s House”.

Weeks before the album’s official release, Styles posted the cover image of the album on Instagram announcing the date of his latest album. He also posted a trailer of its release on TikTok that same day.

Almost two months after, he posted a video on TikTok on how the whole album looks in its entirety and reminded fans of the release date.
