ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Seahawks and Lynch have agreed to a new deal.

Lynch's Back Will Factor into Decision

Friday, Feb. 13

Dan Hanzus of NFL.com reported Lynch's health will play a key role in his decision:

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Friday's edition of NFL Total Access that Lynch's back issues are chronic and will be a major factor in his decision-making this offseason, according to people close to the star running back. Lynch has compressed cartilage in his back, a condition that will not heal and can get worse as a result of Lynch's punishing running style.

NFL Media's Robinson: Lynch's Plans Unknown

Thursday, Feb. 12

NFL Media's Michael Robinson discussed former teammate Marshawn Lynch's plans Wednesday:

I don't know exactly what Marshawn is thinking. I don't think anyone knows exactly what he's thinking. But what I do know is that the guys in that locker room mean the world to him. What I do know is that he's the best running back in National Football League. And what I also know is he is under contract next year.

Robinson also noted that retirement could be an option for the running back:

I cannot sit here 100 percent and say he will retire. ... We talk about him saying "I'm about that action." It's not just about football. Go to that Oakland community. Go to the kids that he's servicing. Talk to those kids. ... That's what's really important to him. ...

This is a man of principle. He's a very private guy. When he sets his mind to something, that's what he believes in.

On Friday, Feb. 13, ESPN's Terry Blount added more from Robinson on Lynch's future:

After speaking with Lynch, Robinson said Lynch also is considering retiring because of the toll that eight years of his physical running style has taken on his body. Robinson doesn't think Lynch's decision is about money, although the Seahawks have indicated they would be willing to extend his contract.

"I don't think it factors in too much," Robinson said, "but obviously this is a business. With the running back position being so devalued, I think he wants to be paid like the heartbeat of the team, which he should be.

"He knows that he has the leverage. He knows that he's the best back in the league. He knows he's a difference maker not only on the field but off the field."

Seahawks Reportedly Offer Lynch "Huge" Deal

Sunday, Feb. 1

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported Marshawn Lynch, 28, had been offered a "huge" contract extension heading into Super Bowl XLIX:

The Seattle Seahawks not only want Marshawn Lynch around next year, but they've made a significant commitment to keep him on their team, possibly, for the rest of his career.

On the heels of another dominant season for the running back nicknamed "Beast Mode," multiple sources tell me Seattle has made Lynch an offer on a huge contract extension that would keep him in a Seahawks uniform for years to come.

The deal is believed to include more than $10 million for Lynch in the 2015 season alone. Lynch currently is slated to make $5 million in 2015, the final year of what originally was a four-year, $31 million deal.

The Seahawks believe that Lynch, who has rushed for at least 1,200 yards in each of the past four seasons, has outplayed his contract, sources say. They want to reward him for his work.

Lynch's future had been up in the air for some time.

He held out in training camp before the 2014 regular season until the Seahawks gave him $1.5 million in guaranteed money by restructuring his existing four-year, $31 million contract.

Then came a report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen in October 2014 that stated Seattle was considering the idea of cutting Lynch, who had a $5 million base salary in 2015, once the season was over.

"The organization has grown tired of his ways, including pulling a no-show at the White House Super Bowl ceremony, his training camp holdout and his possible contribution to locker-room distractions," Mortensen wrote after speaking with sources close to the situation.

On Jan. 18, Rapoport reported the franchise had an about-face and leaned toward bringing Lynch back in 2015. Rapoport added that Lynch's high level of play all but made the decision for the Seahawks.

On Jan. 23, Seahawks general manager John Schneider spoke on Lynch's future during a question-and-answer session, courtesy of The Seattle Times' Bob Condotta:

On if there's anything he can say about the conjecture about Marshawn Lynch's future: "No. I mean, he's under contract next year. He's a warrior. Goes out there every weekend and lays it on the line. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better running back in the National Football League."

On if he is tired of his act: "No. I kind of love his act."

Lynch enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in 2014. He rushed for 1,306 yards and 13 touchdowns in addition to catching 37 passes for 367 yards and four scores in the regular season. Lynch also registered the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of the NFC title game versus the Green Bay Packers.

"He's the heart and soul of their team, which they recognize, and they want him to retire a 'Hawk," noted Rapoport.

It's always a bit of a gamble committing money to a running back approaching 30, especially one with Lynch's mileage and hard-hitting style.

In addition, money will be tight for the Seahawks after Russell Wilson's extension. With that said, Lynch is the backbone of the offense and one of the biggest reasons the franchise made back-to-back Super Bowls. He's showing no signs of slowing down.
