The traveling road show that is the NFL draft could be coming to the nation's capital in the future.
Per Nicki Jhabvala and Mark Maske of The Washington Post, Washington Commanders officials and Washington D.C. representatives are "optimistic" the league will host the draft as soon as 2027.
The report did note people within the NFL are cautioning against the Commanders' optimism because "competition is intense as many cities with NFL franchises aspire to be picked to host the popular and increasingly lucrative event."
After being held in New York City from 1965 to 2014, the league has opened up the draft to a bidding process for cities with an NFL team.
Chicago (2015-16), Philadelphia (2017), Dallas (2018), Nashville (2019), Cleveland (2021), Las Vegas (2022), Kansas City (2023) and Detroit (2024) have all hosted the draft in the last nine years.
The only time the draft wasn't held on location during that span was in 2020. It was originally scheduled to be held in Las Vegas but was turned into a remote event via videoconference due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jhabvala and Maske noted the Commanders were among 12 teams that had representatives at this year's draft in Detroit to conduct site surveys.
The NFL announced this week that the 2026 draft will be held in Pittsburgh. Next year's event will take place at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
There's no set timeline for the league to announce the site of the 2027 draft, but the NFL has announced the 2025 and 2026 events in May two years ahead of time.
If that pattern follows, the 2027 draft location could be announced as soon as May next year.
