The Philadelphia Eagles lost running back Miles Sanders this offseason, but they reportedly don't plan on replacing him with a former division rival.

According to James Palmer of NFL Network it "doesn't seem likely" the Eagles will sign Ezekiel Elliott after the Dallas Cowboys designated him as a post-June 1 release.

It's not as if the Eagles haven't addressed the running back position.

They agreed to a deal with former Seattle Seahawks playmaker Rashaad Penny, who brings a high ceiling but plenty of injury risk. While he hasn't appeared in more than 10 games in a season since he was a rookie in 2018, he led the league at 6.3 yards per carry in 2021.

Then there is Kenneth Gainwell, who figures to be even more involved in 2023.

"When I was there towards the end of the season, he kept gaining steam," Palmer said of Gainwell. "Remember, he played more snaps than Miles Sanders in the postseason and averaged 5.5 yards per carry in the postseason. He's a better receiving back than Miles Sanders. They utilize him in the passing game."

As for Elliott, there was a time when Philadelphia or any other team would have surely jumped at the chance to add the Ohio State product.

He led the NFL in rushing yards per game in each of his first three seasons from 2016 through 2018 and has three Pro Bowls and four campaigns of more than 1,000 rushing yards on his resume. He also led the league in rushing yards as a rookie (1,631) and in 2018 (1,434).

However, the 2022 season was his seventh straight with more than 230 carries. The wear and tear of the position have led to knee concerns and a drop in explosiveness, and he posted a career-worst 3.8 yards per carry last year.

Perhaps a change of scenery and healthy offseason will help him rediscover his form next season, but it doesn't seem like that will happen with the Eagles.
