ATLANTA — Construction at the North Druid Hills Road bridge is ramping up before it closes for at least 90 days.
Starting Monday, Feb. 5, Georgia Department of Transportation contractors began preliminary structure work on the North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek, according to a release.
GDOT said there will be nightly lane closures in February while the contractor finishes necessary activities ahead of a planned 90-day full bridge closure. The construction will be dependent upon the weather.
As soon as it's available, officials will release the start date for the extended closure and detour.
The full road closure between Buford Highway and W. Druid Hills Drive is expected to begin in March.
Drivers will have to use a five-mile detour route, shown below. The detour will follow I-85 northbound to Exit 91, SR 155/Clairmont Road, and then turn onto SR 13/Buford Highway.
Drivers will still have open access from I-85 (Exit 89) and properties next to the bridge work zone during this time, according to GDOT.
The bridge replacement is part of the larger I-85 at North Druid Hills Road interchange improvement project. The current bridge was built in 1962.
GDOT officials said the new bridge structure will be wider and safer for increasing traffic. Officials added that there will also be larger sidewalks and ADA-compliant ramps at crosswalks.
