Patricia A. Newsome

November 18, 1957 – May 30, 2020

On Saturday May 30, 2020, our dear Patricia was called home to her heavenly reward with Jesus from her home in Norfolk.

“Sister Patty,” as she was affectionately called, possessed an endearing love for God. Her selfless ministry touched a countless number of youth, co-workers, and neighbors as well as friends and family.  Her love for GOD impacted anyone in her presence. Patty was a passionate soul and excelled at everything she touched.

She was the ninth born to Anderson Mitchell Sr. and Anna Mae Mitchell of Steubenville, Ohio, November 18, 1957.

After marrying in 1980, she and Richard believed and trusted God for direction and soon moved to Norfolk, Virginia where he began working for the Christian Broadcasting Network in Virginia Beach. In Norfolk, they joined in fellowship with the saints at New Hope COGIC, under the leadership of the late Bishop Herman Clark, Sr.

Patricia worked for the City of Norfolk Health Department for a number of years as an Executive Administrative Assistant and received Support Person of the Year Award. As a dedicated and diligent worker, she drew many of her associates to the understanding of the Gospel in word and demonstration. She retired from PRA after working there for 9 years in 2019.

In 2003, the Newsomes embarked on a Pastoral ministry where “Sister Patty” became the First Lady of New Covenant Outreach of Norfolk. For the 11 years, the ministry performed outreach to community, and she helped develop a detention home ministry in Norfolk known as the “God Squad”. Souls were saved and lives were dramatically touched through the prayers, counsel, and Godly advice of the Newsomes. She was a faithful volunteer coordinator for the Meals on Wheels feeding program for senior citizens in the community from the church. She helped launch a nursing home ministry called the “Least of These” , which is based on Matthew 25:35 when the Lord declares the importance of caring for those who are hungry, sick and imprisoned: “Assuredly I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of hese My brethren, you did it to me.”

Over the years, Patty has endured numerous health challenges. She was a kidney transplant recipient after being on dialysis for 10 years. She bravely fought her cancer battle for over a year before the Lord called her home. Yet, any one in her presence would not know what she had been through. One of her favorite songs was “I Won’t Complain”, and that was her testimony till this day.

She was preceded in death by her father, Anderson Mitchell, Sr., mother, Anna Mae Mitchell (Harris), stepfather, John Harris, brother, Dwight Mitchell and sister Barbara Jean Clark.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Richard Newsome, Sr. of 39 years, son Richard Newsome, Jr. (Cherise); daughter Patrice Richelle Jones (Greg II) and son Joshua Lamar Newsome, Sr. (Brittany) and 10 grandchildren all of Norfolk, Va.

Dear siblings remaining include Helen Duncan of Ohio, Audrey Weatherly (Wilbur) of Pennsylvania; Nancy Douglas (John) of Ohio, Anderson Mitchell, Jr. (Vickie) of Nevada, (Thomas Mitchell (Tracy) of Ohio, Arnold Mitchell (Charlene) of Ohio, and Donald Mitchell of Ohio. Also left to cherish her memory are six godchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, extended family members, her Sister Circle, Princess Warriors, church family and many, many friends.
