Saquon Barkley is joining his former NFC rival Philadelphia Eagles after spending his first six years with the New York Giants, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday.
He signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract potentially worth up to $46.75 million with $26 million guaranteed at signing. His $15.833 million-per-year average would be the second highest among running backs in NFL history.
While Barkley's career has been marred by injuries, the 27-year-old has shown potential that he can be the best running back in the league when healthy. He had 2,028 total yards on his way to an Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2018 and has had two other seasons where he rushed for more than 1,000 yards.
He had 962 rushing yards in 2023—a season where he likely would have surpassed 1,000 rushing yards had it not been for a high ankle sprain that sidelined him for three games. If Barkley can stay healthy in 2024, he will make the Eagles' offense one of the most exciting in the league.
Barkley now teams up with quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is coming off a season where he threw for 3,858 yards and 23 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. Barkley's new team could make him a player to watch for in fantasy football this year.
Having a solid quarterback is something Barkley lacked in New York last season amid the Giants' inconsistency at the position. New York never had a consistent starter with Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito all spending time under center. With Hurts throwing him the ball, Barkley's receiving-yard numbers could get much better.
Barkley will also be taking snaps behind one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Given Barkley's production behind a shaky Giants offensive line, the former Pro Bowler could see his numbers increase significantly. Barkley has been an RB1 for almost his entire career, but joining the Eagles makes him a lock to be one of the first running backs off the board for fantasy owners.
His teammate Hurts will also be a top quarterback candidate in fantasy football this year. Hurts accounted for the second-most fantasy points among quarterbacks last season, per FantasyPros, and his numbers likely won't take much of a hit this year. Hurts could see his rushing touchdown total drop some this season, with Barkley likely getting the nod in goal line situations that Hurts previously would have gotten the ball, but it won't be a surprise if the Eagles still lean on the "tush push" again this season.
Where Hurts and Barkley will land in fantasy drafts this season is still a ways away, but there's no denying the Eagles now boast one of the most dangerous offenses in the league. With Barkley in the backfield and Hurts having DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown downfield, Philadelphia will have its way with opposing defenses.

The Eagles are coming off a disappointing 11-6 season that ended in the wild-card round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but with a new star in the backfield, Philadelphia will certainly be a contender.
