From Dan Duggan's pregame story: "One of the leaders from last season’s defense now resides in Seattle. Julian Love, who led the Giants in defensive snaps last season, left to sign a two-year, $12 million contract with the Seahawks in free agency.
The Giants wanted to retain Love, offering an extension during last season’s bye week. But with the safety market booming in recent years, Love was seeking a deal worth at least $10 million annually. The Giants made a three-year offer worth $7.5 million annually, according to a league source.
That offer was taken off the table after the bye week, and negotiations didn’t pick up after the season with Love still seeking $10 million per year. The safety market unexpectedly lagged this offseason aside from the four-year, $64 million deal Jessie Bates signed with the Falcons. Love gave the Giants the opportunity to match Seattle’s offer, but New York had moved on.
It’s easy in hindsight to say Love misread the market, but there was reason to expect a lucrative payday. Seven safeties landed deals worth at least $10 million annually during the 2022 offseason, including players like Arizona’s Jalen Thompson and Tennessee’s Amani Hooker, who were reasonable comps for Love.
Such an offer never came for Love, so he settled for the deal from Seattle that pays him $6 million annually."
