Paul Lawrence Howard was born October 21, 1930 in Portsmouth, Virginia from the union of the late Bishop Paul Howard and Cornelia Newby. Paul gave his devoted soul to Christ at an early age, and spent his formative years in his father’s church, fostering a profound love for spirituality. He met the love of her life, Lillie, who he called his “Sugar Baby” and “Sugar Baby” affectionately called him “Peter Paul.” Their passion became a union on April 10, 1953. From this union, there were six children: Paulette, Sylvia, Sylvester, Paul III, Lisa, and Baby Howard, who passed away shortly after birth in 1969. Paul and Lille soon settled into the neighborhood of Victory Manor of Portsmouth, Virginia, where they called home. Paul joined the United States Army where he served two years in active service. After serving in the military, he pursued a thirty-five (35) year career with the Department of Defense Transportation, working at Oceana Naval Base in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Paul retired in 1986 of committed civilian service. “Peter Paul” loved entertaining his family, loved God, and his church. When visitors came to his home, they were always welcome and he always left his guest with a testament and a smile. His life was a testimony to the power of faith, and he loved to share that gift with everyone he met. He was a walking encyclopedia of Bible verses, and he left a lasting impression by imparting wisdom and comfort through scripture. Paul had a unique ability to infuse humor into every situation, leaving a trail of laughter and joy. His comedic spirit and quick wit endeared him to all who were fortunate enough to know him. On Friday, December 8, 2023, around 9:30 pm, he was called home to be with his Lord and Savior.  Predeceased by his parents, his son Baby Howard, his grandson Sylvester Jr., his brother David Howard, sisters Naomi Bethea and Vivian Stanley, and his wife Lillie Speller Howard. Survived to continue the memories of his life are his children Paulette, Sylvia Johnson, Sylvester (Pamela), Paul III (Cathy), and Lisa Howard-Alston. Paul leaves eight grandchildren: Kevin Johnson (Christa), Robert, Bryan (Ashley), Deonte Alston (Allena) and Ahmad Alston, Alicia, Ashanti, Paul Howard IV, nine great grandchildren: Kevin Jr., Kameron, Romiyah, Mason, Chrisette, Javia, Johan, and Amani Rose and one great, great grandchild, Sarai Reign. Paul also leaves one brother; John Howard (Mabel), two sisters; Virginia Thompson and Cornelia Wyatt. As well, he leaves a Goddaughter Brenda Miles, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who always held a special place in his heart. Paul Lawrence Howard, Jr. now walks in his “newness of life” and a loving memory for all who knew him. Back together again with his lovely wife; both now residing in Heavenly Love. As we say our goodbyes, let us remember “Peter Paul” for his unwavering faith, warm laughter, and the indelible impact he made on our hearts.
