BBC Sydney correspondent Shaimaa Khalil released a statement after the death of Simon Nellist. In the statement, she said that Simon, a diving instructor, brutally died after a great white shark attacked him in Little Bay in east Sydney.
The statement added that he was a regular swimmer at the beach and also a member of the city’s Scuba Diving Social Club.
“We are supporting the family of a British man and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time,” a UK foreign office spokesperson said.
It was odd when the news spread about the death of Simon from a shark attack, as sharks are uncommon in Sydney. The reason for this was revealed that there were long nets and other deterrents in its water which kept such sharks away from the city.
On Thursday, a patrol was performed by surf lifesavers on jet skis, and they covered a distance of 25 KM. They covered an area between the Bondi in the city’s east to Cronulla, which was in the south, but they couldn’t find the shark.
Drones and Helicopters were also implemented during the patrols to search every area for the great white shark.
A statement was officially released by the state government, and they said that their shark expert claims the shark to be a great white shark, and its length is expected to be more than three meters.
Kris Linto told Nine News that a person was observed to be swimming when a shark struck. The shark attacks them “vertically.”
Some people claimed that they heard a scream and when they turned to check, “it looked like a car had landed in the water, a big splash then the shark.” A man claimed that while fishing, he saw a swimmer get dragged under the water.
The man told ABC News, “It was terrible. I am shaking. I keep vomiting. It’s very, very upsetting.” After searching in the water for more than two hours, the authorities found the remaining body parts of the swimmer.
The area’s state MP Michael Daley said that the residents of the area were shaken when they heard a swimmer died from a shark attack. He said that the person who died was their regular visitor and came to swim every day.
He added, “It’s a beautiful day at one of Sydney’s most beautiful beaches, but there’s a real dark pall hanging over our community today.”
