Solána Imani Rowe, known professionally as SZA, was born on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri. She grew up in a Muslim household in Maplewood, New Jersey, with a Christian mother and Muslim father. SZA’s older brother is a rapper and she has a half-sister. After attending school, SZA spent her afternoons at a Muslim prep school. She participated in sports at Columbia High School and studied marine biology at Delaware State University before leaving to pursue a music career. Her stage name is derived from the Supreme Alphabet.

After the September 11th terrorist attacks, SZA stopped wearing her hijab due to bullying from her middle school classmates. Her experiences growing up in a multicultural household and dealing with discrimination have influenced her music.

SZA’s Music Career

SZA self-released the EPs “See.SZA.Run” and “S” before signing with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2013. Her 2014 EP “Z” produced the hits “Babylon” and “Child’s Play” and she later wrote songs for Beyoncé and Rihanna.
