BEST PERFORMANCE BY OLD ATHLETES
Most professional athletes attain their peek performances during their mid-twenties to mid-thirties in their respective sports. Yes, there are some exceptions.
Satchel Page pitched effective baseball into his 50s, George Blanda played winning football in the NFL after his late 40s, Gordie Howe played All-Star Hockey into his 50s but these were exceptional athletes.
Now I would like to write about a current PGA Golfer who at the ripe old age of 46 is still playing very competitive golf. Vijay Singh (born February 1963), nicknamed "The Big Fijian," is a Fijian professional golfer who was number one in the Official World Golf Rankings for 32 weeks in 2004 and 2005.
He has won three major championships (The Masters in 2000 and the PGA Championship in 1998 and 2004) and was the leading PGA Tour money winner in 2003, 2004 and 2008. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006.
At the start of the 2007 season, Singh won the Mercedes-Benz Championship which was the First FedEx Cup event in PGA Tour history. This win got Singh his 18th tour win over the age of 40, surpassing Sam Snead as most over 40 wins, and making him the all-time over 40 tour winner.
He won again at The Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.
In 2008, at age 45, he won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in early August for his first win of the year and first World Golf Championship. He entered the PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoffs ranked seventh in the standings.
At the first playoff event, Vijay Singh prevailed for his first FedEx Cup win defeating Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland in a playoff. Singh was propelled into first place in the FedEx Cup race.
At the second event of the playoffs he triumphed once again at the Deutsche Bank Championship bewildering the field with a five-stroke victory and a final round score of 63.
His season turned into an historic year for Singh: He won the PGA Tour money list for the third time in his illustrious career and he surpassed Harry Cooper for most PGA Tour wins of all time for a non-American.
Singh has won 22 times on the PGA Tour since turning 40-beating the records of Sam Snead (22), Julius Boros (10), Kenny Perry (9), Gene Littler (7) and Dutch Harrison (7). He is the second man to reach $60 million in PGA Tour earnings after Tiger Woods.
His 34 career victories are the most on the PGA Tour by a non-American player and place him 14th. on the all time list. He has spent over 500 weeks ranked in the top 10 of the Official World Rankings.
In all, Vijay Singh has won 58 tournaments around the world, 22 again of which have come in the 5 1/2 years since has tuned 40. He might still be competitive on the PGA Tour at 50. Recently the 6'2", 208lbs. Singh was asked by a golf reporter how he stays so competitive at his age.
He responded that diet, exercise, and hard work on his golf game are his secret. He also said that stretching exercises are very important to keep his body flexible. No one on The PGA Tour works harder on his game other than Tiger Woods and it shows up in their results.
Unlike the majority of professional athletes today, it looks like Vijay Singh has shown that some older athletes can still perform at a high level.
