Missing teacher Robert Heikka wife has chosen to remain silent after the retrieval of her husband’s dead body inside his car.

The body of a missing middle school teacher, Robert Heikka, was found inside his car, discovered in a canal in Volusia County, Florida. 

The vehicle, a white 2012 Chevrolet Impala, had been missing since October 2020. The 70-year-old Heikka was last seen at his home in Port Orange. 

He was reported missing after failing to show up for work at Creekside Middle School the following day. 

The Sunshine State Sonar Search Team and Recon Dive Recovery helped locate the car after water levels in the canal dropped significantly, revealing the submerged vehicle’s location. 

The body has not yet been officially identified, but police have been in contact with the missing teacher’s family.

Robert Heikka had been working for the Volusia County School District since 1989 and had been teaching at Creekside Middle School since 2002.

Rescue teams worked to pull the vehicle out of the canal, where they found the body inside. Police believe the driver lost control on a sharp turn, and the car barreled through 75 feet of trees before sinking into the canal.

Volunteers who found the car expressed their satisfaction at being able to give the family answers about what happened to their loved one. Still, they acknowledge that there is never closure for a family losing someone like this.
