Christopher is the real name of Topher Grace but he changed his name because he hated being called Chris by his school friends.

When asked for his name, he used to say Christopher, but people called him Chris, and he always corrected them by connecting Topher. 

In the EllenShow he said that when he went to boarding school, Grace randomly used his name as Topher as a part of the joke, but the hottest girl at school responded with a good comment That's Cute for his name, so he continued with Topher.
