Dolph Ziggler arrived to seemingly accept Drew McIntyre's challenge before revealing the actual challenger was the returning Robert Roode. After months away, The Glorious One was clearly motivated to make a splash on his return.
With the help of a timely distraction from The Showoff, Roode found an opportunity to batter the left leg of the WWE champion. He smacked his leg repeatedly into the steel post and locked in a figure-four leglock.
The Scottish Psychopath persevered and landed a devastating Future Shock DDT, but Roode kicked out. Ziggler gave Roode another opening, allowing him to hit McIntyre with a Glorious DDT but for only a near-fall. With sheer will alone, the WWE champion finally put his challenger away with the Claymore.
Backstage, throughout the night, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, Christian and Big Show had been playing cards. Randy Orton arrived to close out the show, turning out the lights and assaulting everyone.
McIntyre def. Roode by pinfall to retain the WWE Championship.
It is great to see Roode back in a WWE ring. He has been missed. He quickly showed why he deserves a solid spotlight going forward with an inspired performance against McIntyre. This was a wonderful old-school fight as The Glorious One gave the champion a limp he could barely recover from.
It was a better match than the majority of Clash of Champions. This was another incredible notch on McIntyre's belt as WWE champion. He is on one of the best runs with the title in the past decade.
Orton's attack was expected, but WWE made it memorable by getting wacky. The Viper decided to slip in as a janitor with night-vision goggles to truly make sure the legends never saw him coming. Credit to WWE for doing something a little different.
