Chad Gable's WWE contract is set to expire next week unless the two sides come to terms on an extension or a new deal, according to Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp.
Gable, 38, signed a developmental contract with WWE in 2013, and he has been part of the main roster since 2016.
The reported timing of Gable's contract expiration is surprising since he has been part of a significant storyline on Raw in recent weeks, which has seen him challenge Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental Championship.
Although Gable was not part of the WrestleMania 40 card in April, he played a pivotal role in the build, as he coached up Zayn, who went on to beat Gunther and end his 666-day reign as intercontinental champion.
Zayn gave Gable a title shot coming out of WrestleMania, and after Gable lost, he turned heel by attacking Zayn in front of his family in Montreal.
Since then, Gable has been one of the most dastardly heels in WWE, routinely cheating in his matches and belittling his Alpha Academy stablemates in Otis, Akira Tozawa and Maxxine Dupri.
Thanks to interference from Otis, Gable beat Zayn in a non-title singles match on Raw this month, but he was unsuccessful in a Triple Threat match for the title at King and Queen of the Ring, as Otis accidentally clotheslined him, and Zayn pinned Bronson Reed.
On this week's episode of Raw, Gable was able to whip Otis with a belt until Zayn interrupted. Otis still fell in line and left the ring with Gable, but it is clear an Alpha Academy implosion is coming.
It seems somewhat unlikely that WWE will let Gable leave in free agency without making him an offer he can't refuse since all signs have pointed toward him potentially beating Zayn for the first singles title of his WWE career.
WWE has even subtly teased the possibility of Gable dumping Alpha Academy and forming a new stable with the Creed Brothers and potentially Ivy Nile.
If Gable does get to free agency and test the market, Sapp (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News) reported that it is expected he will receive significant interest from multiple other wrestling companies.
That would likely include AEW, TNA, New Japan Pro-Wrestling and any number of other promotions.
Sapp also noted that Gable, who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling, could be approached by MMA companies, as "several" have expressed interest in bringing him in.
Gable can potentially maximize his earning potential if he gets to free agency and hears every offer on the table, but re-signing with WWE would likely lead to the most fruitful run of his career given where his angle with Zayn seems to be leading.
